The Brief
Kenninghall Primary School, located in Norwich, is part of a larger Academy Trust that is focused on expanding its facilities to accommodate increasing enrolment and ensure that the school meets the growing needs of its students. To address this, the Trust identified a requirement for a new modular classroom building that would integrate well with the school’s existing infrastructure, while also supporting modern teaching methods and fostering an enriching learning environment.
The Qube was awarded the project through a competitive mini-tender process. The objective was clear: design, construct, and install a state-of-the-art, single-storey modular classroom that could be completed within a strict time frame. The building had to reflect the Academy’s commitment to sustainability, innovation, and the well-being of its students, while maintaining a cost-effective and efficient build process.

The Solution
Collaborating closely with the client, The Qube developed a bespoke design that not only met but exceeded expectations. The new modular classroom was designed with a focus on creating a connection between the indoor learning environment and the natural surroundings. This was achieved through the installation of large, double-aspect bi-fold doors, allowing an abundance of natural light to flood the room and providing panoramic views of the school grounds.
The bi-fold doors serve a dual purpose: they offer an open and airy atmosphere for indoor lessons while also facilitating easy access to the outdoors, making it perfect for integrating outdoor learning experiences. In line with this concept, a high-quality composite deck was installed at the front of the classroom, seamlessly extending the learning space into the outdoor environment. This deck serves as an outdoor classroom, further enhancing the flexibility of the space for teachers and students alike.
Key Features of the Classroom:
• Spacious Design: Over eighty square meters of classroom space, offering flexibility for different teaching setups and learning activities.
• Bi-Fold Doors: Double-aspect bi-fold doors on two sides to maximize light, ventilation, and connection to the outdoors.
• Outdoor Decking: An enhanced composite deck to provide a smooth transition from the interior to the exterior learning spaces.
• Modern Facilities: The inclusion of a kitchenette for staff use, along with a Disabled WC to ensure the building meets accessibility standards.
The Outcome
The Qube took great care in managing client expectations throughout the project, maintaining open lines of communication to ensure that all requirements were met within the designated time frame and budget. From design conception to the final handover, every stage of the project was managed with precision, ensuring that the school received a high-quality, sustainable building solution.
The result was a spacious, modern classroom that not only met the functional needs of the school but also provided a space that fosters creativity, learning, and a strong connection to nature.
