The Brief

Sandling Primary School located in Kent, required additional learning spaces to accommodate its increasing number of students. Faced with a challenging site location, the school sought a solution that would not only provide the necessary classroom space but also be delivered within a tight timeframe.

The project was awarded to The Qube following a successful mini framework tender process, in which our ability to design, construct, and install a modular building in a complex site environment was key to securing the contract. The primary objective was to create a single-storey modular building that would house two spacious classrooms, along with supporting facilities such as a meeting room, toilets, and storage areas.

In addition to meeting the spatial and functional needs of the school, the design had to be both aesthetically pleasing and in harmony with the existing school buildings. This required careful planning and coordination to overcome site-specific challenges.

The Solution

Working in close collaboration with the School, The Qube developed a bespoke modular building solution tailored to the school’s specific needs and site constraints. The final design consisted of two large classrooms, each equipped with its own kitchenette, providing teachers and students with the flexibility and resources they need to conduct a wide range of educational activities.
To enhance the building’s functionality and create a seamless layout, a central spine was incorporated into the design. This central area serves as a hub, featuring a lobby, a bank of toilets, including a Disabled WC, and storage areas, all of which are essential for supporting daily school operations. A key feature of the central spine is the inclusion of a dedicated meeting room, designed to facilitate one-on-one meetings between teachers and students. This quiet, private space provides an ideal setting for counselling sessions or administrative meetings.

Key Features of the Building:

• Classroom Space: Two spacious classrooms, each over sixty square meters in size, providing ample room for various teaching activities. Each classroom includes a kitchenette, offering staff the convenience of preparing materials as needed.

• Central Facilities Hub: A well-planned central spine that includes a lobby, a bank of toilets (1 WC and 1 Disabled WC), a storage area, and a meeting room.

• Natural Light: Large-format windows that maximize natural light, enhancing the learning environment and creating a connection with the outdoor space.

• External Connectivity: Paviours installed around all external doors, linking the new building to existing stairways and pathways for easy access and flow across the school grounds.

The Outcome

Throughout the 10-week build process, The Qube worked diligently to ensure the project remained on schedule and within budget. By maintaining clear and consistent communication with Sandling Primary School and all project stakeholders, we were able to address any challenges promptly and adapt the design to meet the evolving needs of the school. The end result is a high-quality modular building that not only provides the necessary space for learning but also enhances the overall school through thoughtful design and careful integration with the existing school infrastructure.
